MEDWAY RIVER FIRE DEPARTMENTS
Queens County, Nova Scotia
BURNING REGULATIONS

  • Much of  the Medway River Valley is forest land. It is most unusual to have anyone's dwelling place more than 305 meters from woods and brush. Thus what we do in our back yards can represent a hazard to the woodlands. As such, we are regulated.
  • As of April 1each year, burning permits are required in the counties of Queens, Shelburne, Yarmouth, Digby, Annapolis, Kings and Lunenburg.  Permits are required in all other counties beginning April 15.  Fire season when permits are required continues through to October 15, after when permits are not normally required.
  • Under high risk conditions, the Minister, N.S. Natural Resources  may extend the controls and may even close the woods.
  • You must have a burning permit before you start a fire within 305 metres (1000 feet) of a forested area.

The web site listed above expands upon the regulations and safe practices.  The fire weather index is posted daily on the department's website during fire season:

Weather plays a considerable part in changing burning conditions since sun and a little wind can soon turn an area from a safe area to an hazardous area.   Check the
weather page.
