CAUSES OF FIRES

Data gathered by the Government of Ontario for residential fires during the year 2005 are noteworthy.  We have converted their data into the following bar graph where the data is expressed as percentages.

Graph showing causes of fire injuries and casualties

Eighty nine percent of the fires were accidental and traceable to various systems normally operating in a safe mode. In the following section, PREVENTION,  we shall address various ways of lowering the risks.

The above data from Ontario is somewhat different than what one would expect for Nova Scotia. There is natural gas readily available in much of the heavily populated parts of Ontario whereas that is not true for Nova Scotia. One would anticipate that cooking using electricity will be more common in Nova Scotia. In Nova Scotia, fires related to electricity will probably be more common.
