MEDWAY RIVER FIRE DEPARTMENTS
Queens County, Nova Scotia

FACILITY

Originally there was no fire hall and meetings were held at the Mill Village Community Hall located on the island across the river from the current Hall.  In the 1950’s a used building was moved from Happy Landing to a spot across the road from the current Hall and this was adequate until Gordon Hubley bought the abandoned Mill Village School in 1971.  He gave the building to the Department and after some renovations it became the current Hall.  Some partitions were removed to generate the single room which is used for breakfasts, suppers, and  is also available for weddings an other community events.

The garage was an add-on and this was further expanded in 1983 to accommodate three trucks.  A number of the members did all of the work.  With the addition of the Jordaire compressed air facility, it has become a bit crowded.  The kitchen has been short on space but able to accommodate enough workers to permit serving over 100 breakfasts in a morning, provided everyone kept their elbows close to their sides. The Hall proper can seat over 75 persons at a time and, with the garage used for additional seating, over 150 can be accommodated.   Fire hall, Mill Village, Nova Scotia

During Village Fests, a tent has been added which allows for another 50 people as well as the stage for musicians.  There is an obvious need to expand the kitchen and improve the rest room facilities.  Unfortunately, there is no room to expand towards the rear.  Any expansion of the kitchen will have to be towards the front and that would reduce seating unless the front wall were moved out as well.
