RIVER FIRE DEPARTMENTS
Queens County, Nova Scotia NEWS FROM ALL DEPARTMENTS Posted Thursday May 28, 2009: Woods Fire on Old Kettle Road, Mill Village At 1725 hrs on Wednesday May 27, a call went out to fight a woods fire at the Reudi Kern residence at 627 Old Kettle Rd, Mill Village. Seven trucks responded (3 from Mill Village, 2 each from Charleston and Port Medway) with around 40 responders. The fire was quickly contained and extinguished with trucks returning to their halls at around 1930 hrs. A properly executed burn permit had been obtained but burning was too close to small fir trees and a light breeze came up which spread the fire. The fire fighting operation was well executed and there were six manned water and foam lines in place within 10 minutes of the original page. BY DAVID

Posted Saturday March 14, 2009: Care Urged Re Forest Fires Home owners are being urged to prepare for the upcoming fire season by helping prevent home and property damage caused forest fires. In 2008, 248 fires burned 2,721 hectares of Nova Scotia’s forests and wildlands. High winds caused a few fires to spread quickly. Wind driven forest fires are extremely difficult or impossible for firefighters to control. Natural Resources Minister Carolyn Bolivar-Getson says, as more communities move into traditional woodlands, people need to remember the role that some simple precautions can play in helping to protect not only our forests, but our communities. Officials are also reminding people that burning brush require a permit during fire season adding people should seriously consider burning brush in the winter when it is much safer. BY DAVID

Posted Saturday December 6, 2008: Home Fire During
the noon hour on Wednesday, December 3, the Charleston, Mill Village
and Port Medway Departments responded to a fire in the home of Mrs.
Sylvia Anthony in Riversdale. There was a modest amount of
structural damage with fire having entered the outside wall and sill. A
bag of wood pellets had been placed too near an electric heater
and the slow burning pellets filled the house with smoke which was
reported by a neighbour. The home was 7 Km from the Charleston Fire
Hall and their quick response prevented the house from being fully
engaged. The Mill Village and Port Medway Fire Departments arrived
shortly after and provided back up. There was some water damage and
smoke damage as well. A total of 8 trucks responded. The
house was uninsured and Sylvia will need financial aid to make needed
repairs. Aside fron smoke damage, most of the damage occurred in the
kitchen area. A collection jar has been placed at the MV Post
Office and at Evans Village Shoppe. BY DAVID
