MEDWAY RIVER FIRE DEPARTMENTS
Queens County, Nova Scotia
TO WHAT DO WE RESPOND?

We respond to all 911 calls forwarded to us by our paging service, Valley Dispatch.  The 911 operator forwards the information thought to be pertinent.
Responders inform Valley Dispatch that the summons is being answered and may ask that others be informed of  the responders' needs.

All pages for Charleston are supposed to also be made to Mill Village and Port Medway.  The same holds when the primary page goes to Mill Village or to Port Medway.

The departments are also members of South Shore Mutual Aid .  Most of the mutual aid responses involve Italy Cross, United Communities (Voglers Cove
& Cherry Hill) and Liverpool.  When one of the Medway River Fire Departments sends a truck in response to a Mutual Aid request, the other two departments stand by in back-up.

Port Medway Fire Department  responds to medical emergencies in the role of First Responders.  Charleston and Mill Village do not, but will render aid.

The Emergency Health Service acts as First Responders for medical emergencies in the Charleston and Mill Village Fire Districts.

Burning house graphic All Departments respond to fire calls and, if woodlands are involved, Natural Resources also responds.  In cases where the fire involves NS Power equipment, lines and poles, the Departments respond but do not fight fires until NSPC turns off the power.  The Departments can only render perimeter control.  Typically NS Power crews will arrive after 30 or more minutes, depending upon crew availability and distances.
With structure fires, the Departments render immediate assistance and do not wait for NS Power crews to turn off the power. NSP will be called to break
the circuit at the transformer. Ideally  the main power switch for the structure has been pulled or the fire has thrown the main breakers.  Fire crews, assume
they have live lines in the structures and proceed with care.

With Chimney Fires, a truck with ladders will be dispatched and an inspection of the chimney and surrounds will be made.  The Departments do not clean
chimneys.

All Departments respond to motor vehicle accidents if requested by the RCMP or the First Responder at the scene.  There now are standard Traffic Management Guideline for Emergency Scenes. (This is a .pdf file which requires a reader such as Adobe Reader to access.)

Nova Scotia Traffic Management Guidelines For Emergency Scenes

Typically a Fire Department will spend 2 or more hours at accident scenes.  The Officer-in-Charge can call in Department of Transport personnel to handle traffic control, but this is usually done if longer control is anticipated.

All Fire Departments respond to calls from Department of Natural Resources for aid in fighting woodlands fires.
