The Medway Fire Departments are located in the Municipality of Queens. The area is part of what is often referred to as Nova Scotia's South Shore. On a topographic map the departments are located in the extreme NE corner of Queens County and share a border with Lunenburg County. Port Medway is a very sheltered harbour and fishing port located on Medway Harbour near the mouth of the Medway River. The fire hall is located on Long Cove Rd., approximately 0.3 km from the Baptist Church. Mill Village is located on the Medway River about 6 kilometers up stream (as the crow flies) from Port Medway. For those who travel by more common means, the distance is about 8 kilometers via Port Medway Rd and, after crossing Highway 103 at Exit 17a, the Medway River Rd. The Mill Village and District Fire Hall is located on The Medway River just over 1 kilometer from Highway 103. This is also the tide head and can be reached by canoe from Port Medway. Charleston Fire Hall is located about 2.5 kilometers from Mill Village on the Medway River Road. It will be on one’s left just after crossing the fairly new bridge. The fire districts meet approximately half way between neighboring communities. The Charleston District extends up river about 14 kilometers and takes in the community of Riversdale and ends at Deans Brook, 4 kilometers short of Bangs Falls. The Mill Village and District Fire Department takes in the additional communities of Danesville, County Line and East Port Medway and extends along Highway 103 from kilometer marker 178 (Lunenberg County Line) to 154 (Happy Landing) which is the beginning of the Liverpool Fire District.. The Port Medway Fire District takes in the shoreline to Long Cove and Ragged Harbour which is reached via East Berlin Rd. All the fire districts contain large sections of woodlands. Responsibility is normally determined by means of access. Primary responsibility for woodland lies with Nova Scotia Natural Resources (Milton phone 354-3462). |
